By way of background, the A-2 was the leather flight jacket issued to the Army Air Corps (the predecessor to the Air Force) in WWII for warm weather use. It was made in various types of leathers—cow hide, horse hide, goat skin. The A -2 was replaced by the MA-1 in the late 1940’s/early 1950’s and by the Nomex 36/P and 45/P in the early/mid 1960’s.
In the late 1990’s the Air Force decided to reissue A-2 leather jackets to pilots for espirit de corps. It was believed by Air Force brass that the A-2 jacket would improve the pilot’s self image and loyalty to the Air Force and would reduce the number of pilots leaving the AF to take jobs with commercial air lines
